what is the filmomat?
The Filmomat is a fully automatic table-top film processor. It can process anything from 35mm up to 5x7" - and even Super-8 or 16mm motion picture films. The machine can run any process from b/w negative, color slide up to ECN-2. Just fill in the chemistry and press the button, the machine will do the rest. The whole process sequence including rinsing steps, bath changes and temperature control is carried out completely automatic. Every machine is hand-built in our workshop in munich, and undergoes individual testing and quality control before shipping.
Overview
The Filmomat is made out of laser-engraved acrylic glass. The process chemistry (500mL for each step) is stored in three acrylic tubes, which are surrounded by a waterbath. A powerful 650W heater brings the waterbath to the correct temperature. Throughout the whole developing process, the waterbath is kept at the desired temperature with 0.1° accuracy. Two digital temperature sensors inside the waterbath and the chemistry tanks ensure accurate temperature measurement.
Separated from the heated waterbath is an additional 7-liter containing compartment, which is used for rinsing steps. Just fill it with fresh water and the Filmomat will draw from it for rinsing and presoaking. No water connection is required for using the Filmomat! The water in this rinsing-reservoir is not heated - you have to fill it with pre-warmed water beforehand. Used water is drained through a waste-water-exit, which can be connected to a discharge or a collection tank by a hose. Used chemicals are always pumped back into their storage tubes. Once you are finished, you can drain them by the drain valves on the right of the machine.
The film is loaded into a processing tank, which can be connected to the Filmomat by a spill-free quick coupling.
programing
The Filmomat is controlled by a modern OLED-display and a single push/rotary switch. The temperature of the waterbath and the chemistry is always displayed on two separate 7-segment-displays. Two LEDs indicate whether the machine is heating or ready for processing. This simplistic user interface makes handling of the Filmomat incredible easy and intuitive.
You can program almost any process you can possibly imagine into the Filmomat, as long as it doesn't exceed 10 steps and requires not more than 3 chemical baths. Up to 50 different custom processes can be stored. For each process, you can specify the temperature and the rinsing pattern. You can also add Pre-Soak steps or process-breaks which can be used for second exposure when doing reversal processing.
You don't have any experience with film processing? No problem - the Filmomat is already pre-programmed for use with the Tetenal E6 and C41 chemistry!
design
When you talk about film processors, you may think of large, bulky and ugly looking devices which produce a lot of noise and are complicated to use.
The Filmomat is different.
In fact, it looks more like some fancy piece of HiFi equipment. Right from the beginning, the goal was to build a machine which not only "does the job", but also looks good enough to be termed "living room friendly". Living in a two-room apartment without having a dedicated darkroom, requires a small footprint and nice design. The Filmomat meets these requirements. With 35x35x40cm it is roughly the size of a microwave oven. The shiny black acrylic housing looks cool and perfectly fits some vinyl played next to it.
processing
The Filmomat is a rotational processor - but it is special: The processing tank is fixed and not moving. Only the film spirals inside the tank are rotating at a speed of 20-50rpm, driven by a small motor inside the cap of the tank. This system allows for extremely compact design and avoids a lot of rotating parts that could wear out over time. The rotation speed can be individually programmed.
There is only one tank for all film formats (135 up to 5x7”). You can also process different formats in a single run! The film spirals used are professional spirals of the Jobo 2500 system. For processing motion picture film (8 and 16mm), a separate processing tank is available.
Cleaning
Keeping the Filmomat clean is crucial to maintain high quality film processing over a long period of time.
Therefore, the Filmomat has a built-in, fully automatic cleaning program. Just fill the 7L-water reservoir with fresh water, connect an empty processing tank, and start the cleaning program. The Filmomat automatically flushes every compartment, every pipe and every valve several times with fresh water. The waste water is drained through the waste-water-exit.
This whole procedure takes only 3 minutes!
